Wool Book Redesign
This project presents a redesign of Hugh Howey’s novel Wool, a book centered on themes of restriction, isolation, and the search for truth under conditions of total control. As part of this redesign, I developed a pair of visual interpretations of the book: one with a focus on imagery as the primary design element and the other with its primary emphasis on typography. The objective was to explore how distinct design approaches could convey the same tension while offering the reader different visual experiences. The idea was to show how these design approaches could be utilized to convey the tension found in the book while providing the reader with different experiences.
The main idea that defines both design directions is the staircase. I chose to incorporate the staircase as a theme to relate it to the verticality of the world inside the Silo, as well as the weight of navigating it. In the first design, the tension is showcased through the scale of the staircase, the use of shadows, and the tight space. In the second design, the shape of the title is designed to relate to the staircase. The idea is to show different solutions that convey the atmosphere of the book while utilizing imagery and typography to tell the story to the reader.
